Program: “Restoring an Atlanta Garden Icon: The Goodrum House and Garden through the lens of landscape architect Spencer Tunnell”

Tour of Goodrum Gardens: Walk about the gardens and hear an introduction of the home by Barbara Hyde, “keeper” of the May Patterson Goodrum Home.

Step back in time to the founding era of our club when beautiful homes with classical gardens were being designed in Atlanta. The Swan House, Pink Castle, and Pace Academy “Castle” were built as country estates along West Paces Ferry Road, then considered a suburb of our city. The May Patterson Goodrum House is another jewel from the period. Highlighting this historical context, landscape architect Spencer Tunnell will lend his insight into the process of restoring the Goodrum gardens to their original plan. Following his talk, we will explore the gardens on site. In addition, Barbara Hyde will bring to life the home as it was in the day of May Patterson Goodrum. Designed by Philip Trammell Shutze, this residence was considered his “most favorite house”. Among other intricate details of the interiors, catch a glimpse of the murals by Athos Menaboni and Allyn Cox.

Important Meeting and Program Notes: Our meeting will begin promptly at 10 a.m. Following the program and business meeting, shuttles will transport members from Lisa’s house on Woodhaven to the Goodrum House (corner of West Paces Ferry and Habersham) and back. Other cars will not be allowed to park at the Goodrum House so everyone going on the tour must take the shuttle. Please wear comfortable shoes for walking in the garden. After the tour, members will return to Lisa’s house for refreshments. A special thanks to Lisa deGolian for graciously allowing us to meet in the media room at her home even though the main house is currently being renovated – her location, so close to the Goodrum House, makes the logistics for this meeting work perfectly!
